All through the year, millions of people work hard at their jobs, with the annual holiday representing what is often the only glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Throughout the winter months, they dream of that wonderful moment when they finish work on the Friday and prepare to jet off to a sun-kissed destination on the following day.
In Europe, there are literally hundreds of towns and villages that offer the ideal holiday environment, especially in the warmer southern half of the continent. Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal are just some of the countries which have thriving tourist industries, and which welcome millions of foreign travellers on an annual basis.

For most people, the holiday itself represents little else than an opportunity to relax and recharge the batteries of life. They want to lie in the sun during the day, perhaps cooling down with the occasional swim and a cold drink or two, before heading out in the evening for a sumptuous meal and a few glasses of wine. In general, that’s all many of us ever want to do, but for those undiscovered areas which remain almost unnoticed it can be something of a shame.

One such place is the city of Palma in Mallorca. The island is one of the most popular destinations for tourists from all over Europe, but especially the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. During the busiest months of July and August, the beaches are often packed with sun-loungers and happy holiday-makers, yet the capital itself can be somehow forgotten amid all the enjoyment.

If you ask most people what they think of Palma the chances are they will only comment on the airport, because that’s often the only place they really visit. Upon arrival at the terminal building they invariably hop onto coaches and are then transported off to their beachside hotels and apartments until the end of their trips.

This seems such a shame, because the city is a historic and fascinating place, with many highly impressive landmarks. Among the more important of them is La Seu Cathedral, an imposing Gothic building, part of which dates back to the 12th century. It’s actually one of the most important places of its kind in the whole of Spain.

Palma is also home to several significant art galleries and museums, so it provides the perfect cultural escape for an afternoon or two. The Museu de Mallorca, located in a 15th century palace, has a large collection of artefacts, and there’s a wonderful museum dedicated to contemporary art for those who like something a bit more modern.

In recent years, a large renovation project has helped to restore Palma’s Old Town to its former glory, and the area is well worth a visit at any time of year. The narrow cobbled streets are atmospheric and deeply attractive, and the local shops provide a fascinating insight into island life.

Maine offers great scenery, small towns, and is home to over five premier universities. The top two universities in Maine are the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine. The University of Maine opened in 1868 with a class of only 12 students and 2 professors. Located on the Stillwater River and teaches over 9,000 students now, but not with only two professors. The University of South Maine is located in Portland, Maine and was opened only ten years later than its University of Maine brethren. The big urban utopia of Portland, Maine offers a lot of great sights and cuisine to the college student or the passing visitor.

Massachusetts is one of the most historic places to visit in the world. Home to some of the most historic colleges and universities to ever exist, Massachusetts is also famous for the historically significant metropolis of Boston. The top colleges to visit in Massachusetts are also in the top 10 of the nation and the world. Harvard University’s main campus is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, right next door to Boston and is the most noteworthy college of Law in the world. For the engineer or computer centric member of the family Massachusetts also houses the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but more internationally known as MIT. MIT is one of the most highly selective research institutions in the world and only has about 4,000 undergraduate students. MIT is not far from Harvard and would be another great part of any trip through Massachusetts.

New Hampshire:

New Hampshire offers great scenery and great culture, but it also offers great education. Home to Dartmouth College is the smallest college in the Ivy League and was founded in 1769 in Hanover, New Hampshire and is only two hours North of Boston, Massachusetts and is the 11th ranked college in the U.S. With great college towns and some of the best ski resorts on the East coast, New Hampshire has a lot to offer for your travels.

Ranked 14th in the nation Brown was founded in 1764 and is located in Providence, Rhode Island. Brown University is the only university that offers a History of Math major that adds more to its history. Rhode Island is drenched in history and was one of the original 13 colonies founding the United States and is the second most densely populated state in the U.S. Its capital, Providence, is not only home to Brown University, but it is also the third largest city in the New England area. Rhode Island attracts people from all over the world through its ports and industries and is a great travel location.

New England has an abundance of culture and historically significant areas to visit as well as a strong hold on higher education. From the early American history found in Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island, to the top colleges and Ivy League universities scattered across all six states. New England is a great travel destination for the college bound and those who enjoy American culture and history.
