Romantic comedies and chick flicks seemed to rule the year in 2011. From a franchise series to the laughable, each one of the top 5 chick flicks of 2011 made a mark that had not been met by any previous year. Here are the films women really embraced in the past year.

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Women flocks to the box office to watch the fourth installment of this movie franchise. Released on November 18, this movies continues the story of Bella, Jacob and Edward played by Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson. The movie franchise was formed from a series of books written by Stephanie Meyer. The movie series is based on a romantic triangle between a human, Bella, vampire, Edward and werewolf, Jacob. According to the recent tabulations, the movie has already brought in more that $650 million worldwide. Not bad for a movie that only cost $110 million to produce.

Bridesmaids

The second best film of the top 5 chick flicks of 2011 was the romantic comedy the Bridesmaids. The movie was released in May of 2011 and quickly began getting a buzz from women viewers. Many of the wives and girlfriends were found to be dragging their dates to watch this hilarious chick flick. The movie has brought in more that $288 million worldwide. The movie centers around the misfortunes of Anne the maid of honor for her best friend Lillian.

The Help

The help came in third for gross revenue, according to recent estimates. This top 5 chick flick only made a worldwide income of just over $203 million, but women loved this adaptation of the book originally published by Kathryn Stockett. It hit the theaters in August of 2011 and instantly became popular with the women. The movie concentrates on the relationship of a young white journalist, Eugenia Phelan, and two black maids during the peak of the civil rights movement in the mid 1960s. The journalist decides to write a book that shows the racism these black servants have to face daily and the book becomes controversial when the white families get their hands on it.

Just Go With It

This romantic comedy came in fourth on the top 5 chick flicks of 2011 list. Its current gross revenue has topped $214 million worldwide, but saw 52 percent of its revenue come from overseas. The movie surrounds the adventures of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. The movie was released February 2011 and became one of the years most laughable chick flicks. The film was based on a 1969 movie called the Cactus Flower, which was originally a Broadway play and adapted from a French play called Fluer de cactus.

Friends with Benefits

Friends with Benefits come is last only because of its domestic revenue. This top 5 chick flick of 2011 only grossed just over $55 million domestically, but found a lot of success overseas, bringing in almost $100 million. The popularity of the movie was generated because of the premise. Friends with sexual benefits. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunas star as the main characters. These two best friends decide that introducing sex to their friendship will not become with any complications. However, as both start getting feeling for each other, those complications develop.

If you are a fan of the Terminator movie franchise then 2009 must have been a good year for you. T4, a.k.a. Terminator 4: Salvation, had a scheduled release date of May 21, 2009. This film was not like the other films, being set in the present time, but was instead intended to start a trilogy of futuristic Terminator films based on the predictions made by the storylines of the original Terminator movies.

The premise of T4 was that the nuclear holocaust caused by Skynet had already occurred and the machines had taken control of the world. As predicted, John Connor was leading the human resistance movement. It is his leadership that was intended to stop the machines from making human beings an extinct species.

There is a rather lengthy list of characters and cast members for Terminator 4: Salvation. The lead star playing John Connor is Christian Bale. Supporting his talents will be Linda Hamilton, who will provide voice over narrations of the film’s events, Anton Yelchin who will be playing Kyle Reese, Sam Worthington who will be playing Marcus Wright and Bryce Dallas Howard who will be playing Kate Connor.

The script for Terminator 4: Salvation was a team effort. The lead writer, much to the delight of Terminator fans, was James Cameron. He teamed up with Gale Anne Hurd and other associate writers to create the next generation of Terminator films. While post-production for this film delayed release of this film slightly, the additional touch ups to the film were well worth the wait. While the film was originally scheduled for an early May 2009 release, special effects driven films are routinely pushed back because of extra time needed to complete their production so it was released later in May than first expected.

With Terminator 4 out on DVD, the next installment is now being promoted. Terminator 5 will continue the storyline initiated by Terminator 4 and will continue to delight Terminator fans around the globe. Right now there are several rumors that are floating around about the T5 film. One of these rumors is that it will be in 3D. This would truly make the new installment worth seeing, as the special effects and computer graphics of this franchise have always thrilled audiences. The predicted release date is still tentative and vague, but it is expected to be released sometime in 2012. This will be a must see film!

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, it’s once again time for TV networks to fill their programming schedules with heart-warming fare to put everyone but the most die-hard cynic into a festive mood. While the following films are sweet and sentimental Christmas classics that make excellent gifts when burned onto a blank bd-r, these are best avoided by the cynical realist. There are, however, a few alternatives that will make even the biggest Scrooge in your family hesitate to say, “Bah, humbug!”

1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
This Frank Capra classic probably holds the record for the most aired Christmas movie on television, as it’s played on numerous stations throughout the month of December. Some networks will even run it as a continuous marathon, so it’s no wonder that it tends to evoke loathing amongst cynics for its story of kindness triumphing over greed through miraculous intervention. For those who want a more offbeat (yet still classic) tale about small-town values, A Christmas Story (1983) makes a great alternative.

2. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
What would happen if a department store Santa Claus claimed to be the real deal? This George Seaton film decided to answer that question, and though Kris Kringle nearly gets committed to a mental hospital by cynical adults, the belief of a small child manages to save him in the end. While this story of charity overcoming commercialism appeals to many viewers, cynics will prefer Bad Santa (2003) a decidedly more twisted take on the Santa Claus/child relationship.

3. A Christmas Carol
Pick one, any one, as there are more versions of this Dickens’ sentimental classic than the number of novels he wrote. The 1951 version (Scrooge) starring Alistair Sim as that miserable miser is considered to be the most critically-acclaimed version, but even The Muppets have their own take on the story with The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992). Richard Donner’s 1988 modernization Scrooged adds a lot more snark to the mix, however, making it a bit more bearable for cynics.

4. White Christmas (1954)
The holiday season is nothing without Christmas music, and this delightful musical starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen features a light and fluffy romantic comedy filled with several great song-and-dance numbers that are sure to put anyone in a festive mood. Cynics who want a little more darkness to their holiday musical fare should consider Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), which also offers fantastic musical numbers as well as a romance – but with more skeletons and shrunken heads.

5. Prancer (1989)
Holiday films featuring lovable animals are great gifts for kids when burned onto a blank bd-r, but adults are more likely to overdose on their syrupy sweet storylines. This tale of a young girl who finds Santa’s reindeer Prancer injured and nurses him back to health is likely to cause nausea for cynical realists, but they can get their fix for cute and fuzzy with Gizmo in Joe Dante’s Gremlins (1984), a most unhappy holiday film about a small town terrorized by little green monsters.

The Holy Mountain is one of the most amazing films ever done. This film was created in 1973 and shown at several international film festivals at the time, also had limited screenings at New York and San Francisco.

Unfortunately the wide release of the film only happened in 2007 because it was so controversial.

This movie was directed by Alexandro Jodorowsky and is full of symbolism.

The story goes around the main character reaching a wanted real or unreal objective and what happens on the way to get there, like a spiritual voyage.

I was completely amazed with this film and that’s why I decided to post about it, for me it’s like a present for the human kind because the movie is like opening a cinema Pandora box. I absolutely loved the idea of the director in starting a new kind of film, a film that reaches much further than others in the way that it’s full of emotional messages. A must see for sure!
