In 2009, an ancient Egyptian Canoptic jar was taken for valuation by someone who had been using it as a garden plant-pot in Dorset, UK. The jar was designed to hold the liver of the dead as part of the mummification process and was thought to date from 1550-1069 BC. The owner was given the item after the death of an uncle who was a collector. They didn’t know what it was and kept it on their patio and used it as a decorative item.

In 1991, a couple in Wisconsin asked a real estate agent to come to their house to value some antiques. Whilst there, he spotted a picture hanging on the wall and tentatively identified it as a work of Van Gogh. The couple inherited the painting from a relative of the husband who had emigrated from Switzerland after the start of World War II. The painting, which had until then been undocumented was authenticated by experts at the Rijksmuseum. It was named ‘Still Life With Flowers’ and was subsequently put up for auction. It sold for $1.4m.

The Louvre’s pride and joy, The Venus De Milo, is one of the most well known Greek sculptures in the world. Being such an important historical piece, it’s incredible to think that it was found lying in a field. In 1820, a Greek peasant hit some stone while working and dug a little more to find the Venus as well as some other sculptures. During its journey to France, the statue lost its arms but is still one of the most admired pieces of art in the world.

In 2009, the television series The Antiques Roadshow arrived in North Carolina and unearthed the most valuable item ever to feature on the US version of the show. A woman who had inherited a collection of carved jade from her father, who bought the objects in the 1930s and 1940s in China, brought the items in to be valued. To her surprise, after identifying a mark under the items, the appraiser identified the pieces as Chinese carved jade and celadon from the Qianlong era (1736-1795). The items were given an auction estimate of up to $1.07m.

Finally, in 1989, a man from Pennsylvania bought a picture for $4 at a flea market because he liked the frame. Upon removing the picture, he discovered a folded copy of the Declaration of Independence behind it. The document, in pristine condition, was one of only 25 known surviving copies printed in 1776. In 1991 it was sold for $2.4m. The new owner, Donald Scheer, went on to sell it again in 2000 in a live auction for $8.1m.

Stencil is a great technique for who doesn’t draw so well. You don’t need to draw well because you can get your figure from a computer and print it in paper which is a great technique to do a stencil.

A stencil is a piece of paper with some kind of drawing that you put in the wall and then just spray or paint over it. All you paint with the same stencil will look the same but if it is a good stencil you’ll always have good paintings.
