Books are filled with delightful words and stories that help develop the creative mind of a child. Reading can take a child on adventures that may have him working on a farm, and then whisk him off discovering space and magical lands with dinosaurs that bake treats. Books offer adventure after adventure. Teaching children to have a joy for reading will help them build self-confidence and have a better chance at succeeding at life in general. Give your child the best chance by reading to them at a young age and continue reading to them throughout their elementary school years.

A great way to introduce children to the joy of reading is to focus on a subject matter they cannot turn away from. One of the best is of course man’s best friend, dogs!

Take a look at some of our favorite dogs from children’s books.

How Rocket Learned to Read

Cover of How Rocket Learned to Read

Written by Tad Hills, this delightful picture appeared on the New York Times best sellers and won awards for the story and illustrations. The featured puppy, Rocket helps portray the importance of learning how to read in a way that will keep kids begging to have this book read again and again. Children will also discover why it is necessary to listen and practice when it comes to reading.

Dog Loves Books

This enlightening book teaches the valuable lesson that as long as you have books and a passion for reading, you will never be lonely. Author Louise Yates created a dog that had such a passion that he opened his own bookstore. While his clientele did not start with a boom, dog was still okay because he had so many adventures with the characters in his books. Soon his store becomes busy. Dog has all the knowledge needed to make recommendations to his clients since he has read all of the books.

Puppy Love: A Litter of Puppy Stories

Puppy Love is a sensational collection of three all-time favorite dog stories combined into one fabulous book. Sharing the delightful stories of Hugs and Kisses, Don’t Worry Wags and Wiggles will enthrall a child’s imagination and love for the lovable four-legged dogs featured in these stories.

Dogs

Written by Seymour Simon, Dogs unlocks the magic of owning a dog through full-color illustrations of dogs working and playing. This book beautifully illustrates ideas for children to consider when they are thinking about getting a new dog.

Dogs Don’t Brush Their Teeth

Authors Diane deGroat and Shelly Rotner are a perfect match. Let your imagination run as this hilarious book sets out to discover the many things dogs do and especially what they do not do. The authors cleverly capture the laugh-out-loud scenarios dogs so often find themselves in as they live along with humans.

Give these excellent books a try and you will be pleased with the exciting squeals sure to ensue as the child in your life eats up these fun-packed, lesson-filled stories. Remember, it is never too late or early to begin sharing the joy of reading. Open a book and show someone how to start an adventure today!

Susan Wright DVM is a practicing veterinarian of more than ten years. Dr. Wright advocates the proper care of pets by sharing her knowledge through writing. Susan is the dog containment systems expert for Dog Fence DIY.

The world of nature can be a dangerous place at the best of times. However when a mighty beast breaks trend and begins seeing humans as viable prey, dangerous becomes a serious understatement. Below are some famous and grizzly examples of wild animals that garnered a taste for human flesh. We’ve got three big cats, a vengeful bear and a croc that is purported to be the largest that’s ever lived…

Picture – StuartWebster

Gustave

We’ll begin with the crocodile. He was named Gustave by Patrice Faye a French naturalist who has been trying to capture the giant croc for years. Believed to be over six meters long and weigh about one ton, Gustave is the only man eater on this list who is still alive. He is believed to have killed over 300 in Burundi in Africa and is still going. Many attempts have been made to kill Gustave, but all have failed, it is said that his hide is a map of these attempts, scarred by knives, spears and even bullet wounds.

Champawat Tigress

The Champawat Tigress is credited with being the most prolific man-eater of all time. Believed to have accounted for 437 deaths (this is only the deaths actually reported), this tiger was shot by a hunter, but escaped. The bullet damaged her fangs though and left the beast unable to hunt as usual, so instead began preying on humans. This all took place in a region of Nepal and such was the problem, eventually, after failed attempts by hunters to kill the tigress, the army was called in. Unbelievably they failed too. She did however flee across the border to the region of Champawat in India, where she continued to hunt and gained her name. With the population of the region scared to leave their homes, it fell to Jim Corbett, a British hunter and conservationist to kill the man eater, which he did.

Picture – Rainbirder

Panar Leopard

The story of the Panar Leopard is very similar to that of the Champawat Tigress. Injured by a hunter the leopard was unable to hunt as usual and therefore turned to more easily captured food, humans. The male leopard accounted for over 400 deaths. His demise also came at the end of Jim Corbett’s rifle. It is said that leopards are far more threatening than bigger cats such as lions or tigers. They’re believed by many hunters to be far more cunning and dangerous due to their guile, agility and ferocity when confronted.

The Ghost and The Darkness

The Ghost and The Darkness were the dramatic names given to two maneless male lions that feasted on railway workers in the Tsavo region in Kenya. They were actually brothers too as it turned out. At first the pair would take workers from their camps at night and drag them to the forest. As the terror continued the lions became fearless and would simply attack men as they slept in their tents, consuming the victim in the middle of their camps. Such was the atmosphere of fear that the workers started to believe the lions were the work of the devil and eventually construction on the railway ceased. Chief Engineer John Henry Patterson took it upon himself to solve the problem and although it almost cost him his life he shot both lions in the space of a fortnight. It is thought they killed over 140 people.

Picture – Marshmallow

Kesagake

In Japan there isn’t much threat from man eaters as a rule, however Kesagake the brown bear changed that for a short period of time in 1915. The story took place in an outpost village called Sankebetsu. The bear was big and used to come into the fields surrounding the village and eat corn. This was perceived as a nuisance and the bear was shot, hoping that it would stop him from returning. This was not the case. Kesagake returned, entered the house of a family of farmers and ate its occupants, a baby and its mother. The bear was chased into the forest and shot again, but survived once more. The cycle repeated the next day, the bear descended from the forest entered a house and killed its occupants. Shortly after the 380kg bear that stood at almost three meters tall was shot by a professional bear hunter. Although killing less than ten people the vicious, gory and seemingly revengeful attacks lived long in the memory.

Although we, as a species place ourselves at the top of the food chain, these incidents certainly provide contrary evidence. If it came down to fisticuffs with any of the above, I really wouldn’t fancy my chances.

When Barry John isn’t worrying about what might eat him on holiday he investigates all things birthday gifts related for the gifts ideas people, Find Me A Gift.

Safari tours generally focus on the big five and other sterling representations of the African bush, though there are some things they just don’t tell you in the brochure…

Megalomania – The Tsetse Fly

He’s smaller than a five cent coin, so we can’t really blame him for having an inflated sense of self esteem when he’s responsible for killing up to 300 thousand people a year. His delusional fantasies of power have caused him to take on characteristics of the mythological vampire, using his needle-like proboscis to drink blood and folding his wings over his abdomen when he sleeps – all he needs is a teeny tiny little coffin.

Low Self Esteem – The Boomslang

He comes from a whole family of venomous snakes – all of which have inefficient fangs and small venom glands – but not him, oh no, the boomslang was gifted with huge fangs and venom glands that make him one of the most deadly creatures ever. He should be leaping out of trees and biting people’s faces off causing mass hysteria throughout the continent! So what’s the problem? He’s timid as hell. So shy in fact, that even though his bite can cause death by bleeding out of every orifice, human fatalities are incredibly rare. He’d rather hang out in his tree, avoid strangers and listen to his Tony Robbins tapes.

Psychopathic -The Button Spider

You never get to meet her husbands, because she eats them after they do the nasty. She says it’s a myth but hey – it doesn’t change the fact that you don’t really want to run into her, ever. Known as black widows elsewhere in the world and button spiders in Africa, these creatures boast a few different species in their family. A bite from a black widow is nasty business and just like most famous psychopathic serial killers, they’re recognizable because of their signature mark – a red hour glass on the abdomen.

Multiple personality disorder – The Crocodile

Okay, so they sit on the shore and look like they’re the most chilled creatures on the planet, mouths agape as plover birds pick food from their teeth. One could be forgiven for wanting to take a long look at these seemingly frozen-in-time reptiles who, after hours of sitting still, can suddenly turn into the most terrifying and speedy creatures ever – some of them even gallop! You can’t blame them for having a wide range of contrasting personality traits, as they’re more closely related to birds than other reptiles, and their sex is not determined by genetics, but rather by the temperature during incubation.

Avoidant personality disorder – The Black Rhino

Despite having no natural predators besides man, they’re critically endangered, so who can blame the black rhino for wanting to stay the hell away from everything and everyone? One of the subspecies of the family is already extinct – and it’s only getting worse. These solitary animals sometimes hang out in small groups, but for the most part, they prefer to be alone, often going back to frequent rest spots or ‘houses’ to get away from all the bustle of socializing. Don’t stop by unannounced either, because these anti social creatures are super aggressive and will charge.

Jacky Letard is an animal lover and enjoys Kruger Park safaris and Sabi Sabi bush camps closer to her wildlife passion.
